In 2014, the Finance Act introduced the Employee Ownership Trust (EOT) for company owners wishing to transfer majority ownership in their companies to all of their employees.
This gave a huge boost to employee ownership in the UK. Between 2014 and 2023, RM2 and the Employee Ownership Association recorded the largest employee owned companies in the UK, with the key requirement for inclusion being a minimum employee ownership stake of 25%.
By 2024, the number of companies that have become employee owned by adopted the EOT model had increased significantly.
In recognition of the EOT’s success, and to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the introduction of the EOT, RM2 has decided to update their data to only reflect companies that are controlled by EOTs and thus majority owned on behalf of their employees.
