What is an Enterprise Management Incentive (EMI) scheme?
An EMI is a tax-advantaged share option plan, the most flexible and tax efficient available in the UK, offering a potential tax rate as low as 18% on gains (if certain conditions are met).
It gives participants the right to buy shares at a future date, at a price fixed when the options are granted. Â Performance and retention conditions can be built in so rewards are only delivered when corporate objectives are met. Introduced in 2000, it is widely used to retain and incentivise the key people a company’s future depends on, and can also be extended to all employees.
