What is an employee share scheme?

An employee share scheme — also called an employee share plan — is an arrangement that allows employees to acquire shares, or options over shares, in the company they work for.

Companies use them to reward and retain staff, to attract new talent, and as part of succession planning. Giving employees a stake can build a real sense of ownership and align their interests with those of other shareholders, which in turn helps drive growth in the value of the business.
