What are the penalties for filing a share plan return late?
Penalties are applied automatically and escalate:
- £100 as soon as the return is submitted after 6 July;
- £300 more if it is still outstanding three months later;
- a further £300 if it is still outstanding after six months;
- £10 per day from nine months onwards.
Returns containing factual and deliberate inaccuracies that are not corrected quickly can attract penalties of up to £5,000. If you have received a penalty notice, the priority is to file all outstanding returns immediately — early action is always cheaper than delayed remediation.
