10,000 new owners!

RM2 is over the moon to announce that, just in time for this year’s Employee Ownership Day celebrations, we’ve hit a big milestone: our Employee Ownership Trust (EOT) work has, over the years, created more than 10,000 new employee owners!

This seems a great time to celebrate the wide variety of companies that have embraced employee ownership as the best business model for them.

It doesn’t matter where you’re based, or how many employees you’ve got, or what sector you work in – an EOT can be a solution that fits.

The smallest EOT (by employee numbers) that we’ve advised on had just 5 employees; the biggest, a whopping 3,200.  On average (taking out that outlier), the EOT companies we helped employed around 50 people at the time of transition.

Sectors vary too – professional services firms were early adopters and continue to be so.  But we’ve also advised companies in a range of sectors – butchers, bakers and – well, not candlestick makers as such, but certainly creative modern lighting designers and manufacturers.

Employee Ownership is, of course, all about the people – so it’s probably unsurprising that many of our clients are in smaller, people-based businesses where creativity is key, such as marketing, software development and design and engineering consultancies.   At the other end of the scale, businesses with larger numbers of frequently lower paid workers (for example, healthcare and retail) welcome the rewards and sense of community and ownership that is offered by the EOT model.

One of the joys is travelling to visit the owners (old and new) – from Plymouth to Edinburgh,  from Cardiff to Cambridge, we’ve been all over.  We’ve been to swanky offices in the trendiest parts of London; we’ve been in warehouses outside Croydon; we’ve even sat in the owners’ front room to talk through the details of the transaction.  We’ve travelled north, south, east and west, getting face to face with UK businesses that don’t just make our economy a success, but are committed to a fair, sustainable business model that will survive long into the future.
