EMIs on the increase

Posted on September 10, 2009

The popularity of the Enterprise Management Incentive (EMI) scheme has soared over the last year with 9,110 companies now using this scheme to benefit their employees according to the Office of National Statistics.

In a single year, 2,830 companies opted to introduce EMI share option schemes and options were offered to 26,400 employees. These included employees at all levels, not just directors.

The number of employees exercising options has also increased, from around 7,400 to 8,800 with a total share value of over £300m. Companies enjoyed tax relief of around £240 million.

There has also been a rise in the number of companies offering other types of employee share scheme. The latest statistics show that the number of UK companies offering any kind of tax-advantaged employee share scheme rose from 10,840 to 11,330, a new record.

It looks as though employee share schemes are becoming more and more popular as a weapon against the recession. Companies increasingly use these schemes not only to attract, retain and motivate key members of staff, but also to save large amounts of tax and conserve cash.
